The Council Grove High School Braves improved to 24-1 on the season Wednesday, overpowering the Herington Railers 15-0 in regional baseball action behind an explosive offensive performance and aggressive base running. The Braves will host Cheney Tuesday, May 19.
Council Grove took control early, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first inning. Bradley Doornbos singled home a run, Grady Kepley drew a bases-loaded walk, Luke Stewart added an RBI single, Dillon McDiffett was hit by a pitch to force in another run, and Sayden Liddick grounded out to score two more.
The Braves then broke the game open with a nine-run third inning. Stewart tripled to score a run, Maxton Villalobos and Joshua Senne each added RBI singles, Doornbos drove in another run on a ground out, Reid Buttrey doubled home a run, Kepley singled in a run, and David McDiffett capped the inning with a three-run triple.
Villalobos earned the win for Council Grove, allowing just one hit over three shutout innings while striking out three and walking none.
Brady Idleman took the loss for Herington after allowing 15 runs, eight earned, on nine hits over two and two-thirds innings.
The Braves collected 10 hits in the contest. Stewart, Buttrey and Senne each had two hits, while McDiffett drove in three runs from the eighth spot in the lineup. Doornbos also finished with three RBIs. Council Grove was aggressive on the bases throughout the game, stealing 16 bases. Doornbos, Stewart, Senne, Kepley and McDiffett each recorded multiple steals. The Braves also played error-free defense, with Senne leading the team with three fielding chances.
Ty Braucher recorded the lone hit for Herington.
