The Council Grove Braves earned several first-place finishes and strong relay performances at the 2026 Flint Hills League High School Track and Field Meet, held Friday, May 15, at Mission Valley High School.
Council Grove’s boys placed fourth as a team with 85 points. Osage City won the boys division with 180 points, followed by Lyndon with 107, West Franklin with 89, Council Grove with 85, Chase County with 38, Mission Valley with 34 and Wabaunsee with 23.
The Lady Braves placed sixth with 47 points. Osage City also won the girls division with 157 points, followed by West Franklin with 99, Chase County with 83, Wabaunsee with 73, Lyndon with 54, Council Grove with 47 and Mission Valley with 42.
Council Grove had a strong day in the boys hurdles. Logan Stockwell won the 110-meter hurdles in 16.99 seconds, while teammate Elkan Spear finished second in 17.92. The two traded places in the 300-meter hurdles, with Spear winning the league title in 42.39 and Stockwell finishing second in 42.40.
Mason Samuels also claimed a league title for the Braves, winning the boys javelin with a throw of 182 feet, 3 inches. Kayden Hewitt added a seventh-place finish in the same event with a throw of 145-06.
Syied Smith-Jenkins gave Council Grove another championship performance, winning the boys long jump at 20-05. He also joined Samuels, George Mascote and Easton Stohs on the boys 4x100-meter relay, which placed fourth in 45.79.
The Braves also scored well in the boys distance relays. The 4x800-meter relay team of Kayden Schmidt, Jadyn Picolet, Colton Elsen and Hayden Horton placed second in 9:00.86. The 4x400-meter relay team of Elsen, Schmidt, Stockwell and Blaise French placed third in 3:34.71.
(See Braves league results, Page 2) Picolet added an individual thirdplace finish in the 3200-meter run with a time of 10:50.18. French placed fourth in the 400-meter dash in 52.78, and Mascote placed sixth in the 200-meter dash in 25.45.
For the Lady Braves, Mazie Hayes led the way with a league title in the 300-meter hurdles, winning the event in 49.73. Savannah Stewart placed third in the same race in 55.61.
Hayes and Stewart also scored in the 100-meter hurdles, where Hayes placed fourth in 18.74 and Stewart was fifth in 18.87.
Council Grove’s girls 4x100-meter relay team of Grace Tyner, Hayes, Stewart and Taegan Wilkens placed second in 53.94. The same group also placed third in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:33.90.
Tyner and Wilkens both reached the finals in the girls 100-meter dash. Tyner placed third in 14.77, and Wilkens placed fourth in 14.86.
Breckyn McEuen added a sixthplace finish in the girls long jump at 14-09. Lucy Palmquist placed ninth in the girls discus at 86-10 and eighth in the javelin at 88-00, while Tyner was 10th in the javelin at 84-09.
