Cottonwood Falls plans spectacular July 3 block party

Cottonwood Falls will celebrate America’s 250th anniversary with a block party on Friday, July 3, in front of the Chase County Courthouse. The celebration will be held on Broadway Street between Pearl and Friend streets.

A free swim day at the Cottonwood Falls city pool will begin the celebration, with swimming available from 12:30 to 5 p.m.

Block party activities will begin at 5 p.m. Children may participate in a scavenger hunt on the courthouse lawn, a creature race and a commemorative 250th anniversary coloring activity. Prizes will be awarded.

Community members of all ages will also have an opportunity to add a handprint or message to a commemorative canvas located on the patio at 331 Broadway St. Paint and markers will be provided.

Food will be available throughout the celebration. Hebrews will serve hamburgers, hot dogs and dirty so-das. Granny’s Sweets & Treats and Rick & Jenny’s food trucks will also be set up to serve attendees.

“Honoring America” presentations are scheduled from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. Handheld American and 250th anniversary flags, glow sticks and necklaces will be distributed.

A limited supply of commemorative coins will also be given away, and attendees are encouraged to arrive early.

Musical entertainment will follow from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Emma Chase, Prairie PastTimes and a jam session will present “Songs of America.”

Tours of the Chase County Courthouse will be available through the Chase County Chamber of Commerce. The Chase County Historical Society and Museum will also offer special activities.

The evening will conclude with a fireworks display planned to be especially large in recognition of America’s 250th anniversary.
