UNBOUND Gravel included several race distances this year, including 25-, 50-, 100-, 200- and 350-mile events. Council Grove area residents may be especially interested in the UNBOUND Gravel 200, because that was the race that came through Council Grove on Saturday. Complete results for all race distances can be found at www.unboundgravel. com/results. Two world-class off-road cyclists with roots in traditional cycling disciplines claimed the top elite titles Saturday as UNBOUND Gravel sent riders through the Flint Hills and Council Grove.
Mads Würtz Schmidt won the men’s UNBOUND Gravel 200 in 9 hours, 14 minutes and 51 seconds, while Sofía Gómez Villafañe won the women’s race in 10 hours, 31 minutes and 37 seconds. The 200mile gravel race, which drew about 1400 riders for the leg that went through Council Grove, is especially difficult due to the Flint Hills conditions marked by rain, mud and wind.
Schmidt, a 32-year-old Danish cyclist, has made a successful transition from elite road racing to gravel competition. Before focusing on gravel, he won the Under-23 World Time Trial Championship in 2015 and the Danish National Road Race Championship in 2021. He also competed at the WorldTour level, including in major races such as the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia.
Now riding for the Specialized Off-Road team, Schmidt has quickly become one of gravel racing’s top competitors. His UNBOUND victory came after he had already won The Traka 360 in Girona, Spain, further establishing him as a leading figure in the sport.
His win Saturday also included one of the race’s defining moments. After Schmidt suffered a rear flat tire, teammate Keegan Swenson gave him his rear wheel, allowing Schmidt to continue his pursuit of the victory. Schmidt later rode away solo and finished more than five minutes ahead of second-place teammate Matt Beers. Tobias Kongstad finished third.
In the women’s race, Gómez Villafañe, a 32-year-old Argentine-American cyclist, added another major win to an already decorated off-road career. Born in Argentina before later moving to the United States, she first made her name in mountain biking. She represented Argentina in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in cross-country mountain biking and won the Cape Epic stage race in South Africa in 2022.
Gómez Villafañe, also a member of Specialized Off-Road, has been one of the dominant riders in Amer-family ican gravel racing. She previously won the UNBOUND 200 on her first attempt in 2022 and has also won the Life Time Grand Prix series.
Her 2026 UNBOUND win was her second title in the event. After more than 10 hours of racing in muddy and difficult conditions, Gómez Villafañe prevailed in a five-rider sprint finish. Geerike Schreurs finished second, Cecily Decker third, Rosa Klöser fourth and Paige Onweller fifth.
The victory also placed Gómez Villafañe in UNBOUND’s “1,000Mile Club,” recognizing riders who have completed the 200-mile distance five times. For both champions, Saturday’s wins reinforced their standing among the top gravel racers in the world. For the Flint Hills, the event again brought international attention to the region’s demanding terrain, where world-class cyclists tested themselves on the same roads that carried riders through Council Grove.
