Evergy says repairs could take several days TOPEKA (WIBW) - Monday night’s storms caused several power outages in northeast Kansas.
Utility crews expect to be busy for several days getting the lights back on.
Evergy alone has more than 28,000 customers still without power on Tuesday. They said they have about 75% of those who had been out back on as of about an hour ago.
“So we’ve made some good progress as far as getting some power restored,” said Evergy Spokesperson Gina Penzig. “Things slow down a little bit after you get through that initial chunk because these are the jobs that usually take a little more work or maybe have fewer customers on each repair.”
16,000 of those are in Saline County, where, at one point overnight, the whole city of Salina was in the dark.
Shawnee County has about 6,200 without power. Riley County has 2,100.
Penzig says its crews and contractors will work around the clock.
“The crews are out working 24/7 until we get everybody back on.”

42,000 without power after strong storms TOPEKA (KSNT) – Thousands of people across Kansas and Missouri are without power Tuesday due to recent severe weather that rolled over the area.
Evergy reports via its outage map that it deployed crews and contractors across its service area to places hit with the most damage following the overnight storms. The power company reports that many people impacted by the outages should expect extended restoration times as workers navigate around damage caused by the storms.
“With the large impacted area, number of outages and nature of the damage – poles down, tree damage and downed wires, we expect restoration to extend beyond today for some areas with severe damage. Crews will work around the clock until all customers are back on.”
Evergy said, in a 9 a.m. update on June 9, that it has restored power to 60% of its customers who were impacted by the storms in Kansas. The company said that strong winds that reached up to 115 mph were reported in the Salina area, which caused the entire city to lose power at one point during the storms.
Around 42,000 Evergy customers are still without power in Kansas and Missouri. The company reports there are over 1,500 separate outages still active across its service area.
Evergy recommends if you see a downed power line, call 911, then contact Evergy. ---- Riley County police continue to investigate man’s death in park MANHATTAN (WIBW) - Riley County police were continuing to investigate the unattended of a man whose body was discovered Monday morning in the restroom of a Manhattan park.
