More than 600,000 Kansans projected to travel over 4 th EMPORIA (KVOE) -- Despite higher prices at the gas pump, Kansas AAA is still anticipating a sizeable number of travelers for the Fourth of July holiday period.
According to AAA Kansas Manager of Public and Government Affairs Shawn Steward, current projections indicate roughly 690,000 Kansans are expected to travel over the weekend as part of the more than 72.2 million Americans expected to be taking trips to celebrate the holiday.
While the number of travelers is “slightly up” from the previous year, gas prices are up notably by 60 cents over the same time last year, with the Kansas average as of Wednesday sitting at $3.51 a gallon as opposed to $2.90 a gallon at this same time last year. Steward says the higher gas prices do not look to be affecting those who will be traveling by vehicle, as AAA is projecting 84 percent of travelers will drive to their desintations.

New tiger cubs born at Tanganyika Wildlife Park GODDARD (KAKE) – Tanganyika Wildlife Park on Tuesday announced the arrival of three Bengal tiger cubs.
Born on June 11 to resident tigers Sienna and Grayson, TWP says the litter of two males and one female is the pair’s first, and the first tiger cubs born at the park in years. Keepers are hand-rearing all three around the clock in the park’s carnivore nursery. Officials at the park say the births were almost a surprise, saying that tigers reveal little when they are expecting.
Pregnant tigers show few outward signs, TWP says, and first-time mothers show fewer still. The team had also not yet observed a confirmed breeding between Sienna and Grayson, so a litter was not on the calendar.
None of the cubs have names yet, as officials at the park say that currently the cubs’ stripes are still too similar to tell apart at a glance.
Last year, the park welcomed a litter of seven cheetah cubs, four giraffe calves and the iconic Mars, a pygmy hippo, who just turned one.
