Storm brings heavy rain, hail, tornadoes

(JC POST) -- Spring storms brought heavy rain, hail and tornadoes to northeast Kansas and northwest Missouri on Monday.

A line of storms began in Manhattan, with street flooding and damaging winds, and moved east across northwest Missouri and into the Kansas City metro. The National Weather Service issued multiple tornado warnings The National Weather Service reported 92 mph winds in Leavenworth County, with additional gusts topping 80 mph in Johnson County, Kansas.

The storms left widespread power outages in portions of northwest Missouri and the Kansas City metro but there are no reports of injuries.

Geary County Emergency Manager Garry Berges estimated 6070 mph winds in the Clarks Creek - Burley Hill areas of the county. There were reports of about 80 mph winds farther northeast in neighboring counies.

One tornado was reported approximately two miles norh of Wakefield. There were others in Clay and Cloud counties.

Flash flooding occurred in some spots and there were downed tree limbs.

Berges estimated about three and a half to four inches of rain fell between combined storms early Monday morning and Monday evening.

A state highway near Manhattan was reported to be closed Tuesday morning as a result of high waters in the area.

According to KanDrive.gov, K -18 highway was closed between K-177 near Manhattan to the west and K-99 highway near Wabaunsee on the east.
