Topeka Zoo says age is catching up to lioness

TOPEKA (WIBW) - Asante, a 22-year-old lioness, is reportedly not feeling her best, according to the Topeka Zoo.

The Topeka Zoo shared on their Facebook page that Asante is receiving close attention from their animal care and veterinary teams. Asante was previously diagnosed with renal disease, a condition the zoo says is common among aging cats, including lions.

Asante celebrated her 22nd birthday in April and is the oldest living lioness in an AZA-accredited zoo. The median lifespan for a lioness in human care is 16 years, with some reaching 20.
