Washunga Days will bring two days of activities to Council Grove, on Friday and Saturday, June 19 and 20, with nearly all events free for residents and visitors.
The celebration will begin Friday night with a street dance on North Neosho Street, just off Main Street. The evening will include live music, food trucks, a beer garden, face painting and kids activities. The street dance will run from 6 p.m. to midnight, giving the community a chance to gather downtown for the opening night of the annual celebration.
Saturday’s schedule will begin with the Washunga Days Parade at 10 a.m. on Main Street. The parade will start on the east side of town near the fire station and travel west on Main Street through downtown Council Grove to the TCT Solutions Center on West Main, across from Greenwood Cemetery.
Throughout the day on Saturday, activities will be held in several areas of town. In Neosho Riverwalk Park and near the river, visitors will find food trucks, a beer garden, kids activities, a fishing derby and cornhole. The D.A.R.E. pancake feed will also be held 8-10 a.m. on Saturday at 228 W. Main. Donations are accepted. Other Saturday activities include a craft fair at the high school and flea market at the Bolton Soccer Complex (near corner of Valley and Union), a car show on the eastern side of Bolton Soccer Complex, Touch-A-Truck at the high school and free swimming for all ages at Council Grove’s Aquatic Center 12-7 p.m. The cornhole tournament on North Neosho Street is open to registered contestants.
One of the best parts of the weekend is that nearly everything is free. The Saturday night concert at the Neosho River Amphitheater is the only admission-based event, where an evening of live music from three bands is $25. Food trucks, beer garden items and vendor purchases will be available separately.
The Kaw Nation will be performing a Pow Wow at the tribe’s Allegawaho Memorial Heritage Park, at South 525 Road (3.6 miles south on Dunlap road – look for signs) at 7:30 – 9 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday nights. Lawn chairs are highly suggested, as there is no public seating.
With activities for children, families, music fans, shoppers and parade- goers, Washunga Days will offer a full weekend of community celebration in historic Council Grove.
