Area author Thane Schwartz of Pilsen, Kansas, has released his 11th book, Some Like It Short, a collection of 20 short stories now available on Amazon. The book brings together stories that range from dystopian science fiction to western romance.

Juneteenth, celebrated every year on June 19th, is more than just a date—it’s a powerful symbol of freedom, resilience, and the long journey toward justice for African Americans. Also known as Freedom Day, Emancipation Day, and Jubilee Day, Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally learned they were free—two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by President Abraham Lincoln.

Alpha Theta Chapter of DKG Society International will be awarding two $750 scholarships for the 20262027 school year for women who graduated from a high school in Lyon, Morris, or Wabaunsee counties. To be eligible you must be a woman who is a junior or senior in college majoring in education or an educational related field; a woman educator (not in DKG) who is in a declared education masters’ program or in a transition to teaching program.

Mike Luce, a longtime Council Grove resident remembered for his quiet service to the community, will be honored posthumously Friday evening during the 2026 Washunga Days Powwow. Sharon Haun, representing the Friends of Kaw Heritage, will present the Luther Pepper Award in Luce’s memory.

MANHATTAN (WIBW) - An early- morning fire destroyed several storage buildings and their contents early Wednesday near the Kansas State University Dairy Unit in Manhattan. The blaze was reported at 4:05 a.m.

(KWCH) - The Abilene Police Department confirmed that a 26-yearold Abilene man, reported missing early this month, was found dead behind the grain elevator in Solomon. Abilene police identified the man as Dominick Campbell.
