Area firefighter associations to receive $78,696.86

Area firefighter relief associations in Morris County, Chase County, Herington and Alta Vista will receive a combined $78,696.86 through the Kansas Firefighters Relief Act. Kansas Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt announced Monday that the Kansas Department of Insurance has made its annual distribution to local Firefighter Relief Associations across the state.

March 4, 1841, came to Washington under a lid of cloud and a hard, restless wind. The cold carried up the streets and climbed the Capitol steps. Wool felt thinner than it should. Tens of thousands of Americans lined the streets that day — banners flapped in the breeze as a procession of bands and replica log cabins (a symbol of the Harrison campaign) made their way down the route.

PATRIOTISM

The Flint Hills’ patriotism shone brightly on Flag Day June 14. Above the Flint Hills Community Band played at the Chase County All Veterans Memorial Park in Cottonwood Falls before the retirement of old American flags (above right). In Council Grove, the honoring flag retirement ceremony (right) was held by the Army tank near the baseball complex. Those in attendance came to honor our nation’s flag.

Flint Hills communities observe Flag Day with retirement ceremonies

Flint Hills communities marked Flag Day with patriotic ceremonies honoring the American flag and the veterans and residents who gathered to take part in the annual June 14 observance. In Council Grove, Rebecca Elias of Frederick Phillips Post 121, said the post retired nearly 60 American flags during its Flag Day ceremony.
