Circa 1956, the author, a Boy Scout, assisted in paper drives. When loading out stored papers, the author found an old Bible with a family’s genealogy, and rescued it. About half a century later, the author learned former Dunlap resident LeRoy Pritchard was a relative of that family, and gave the Bible to him.

The City of Council Grove will hold a public meeting on Wednesday, June 24, at 6 p.m. at City Hall to discuss the Downtown Streetscape Project. Residents, business owners, and community members are encouraged to attend to learn more about the project, view proposed improvements, ask questions, and provide feedback.

A familiar name in Council Grove is preparing for a new chapter. After more than 30 years of guiding customers through life’s biggest decisions, Dee Gieswein has announced her retirement from Gieswein Insurance Agency.

Local youth athletes from the 9–10 age division turned in strong performances at the 2026 Sunflower State Games Track and Field Meet, held Saturday at Hummer Sports Park in Topeka. Elijah Cosgrove captured first place in the 3000m run with a time of 14:07.35 and added a third-place finish in the 800m run in 3:13.51.

Former USD 417 and Council Grove High School students will return to Council Grove next weekend for the June 27 all-school reunion at the Morris County 4-H Building. The event was advertised to anyone who considers Council Grove their home school.

Pleasant weather greeted Council Grove parade-goers Saturday morning as they lined the 1.5-mile route to view the 100+ entries in the 2026 Washunga Days Parade. The annual parade again drew many visitors from out of town, along with a large contingent of local residents, organizations, churches, families, businesses and youth groups.
