The Morris County Commissioner meeting was called to order on Tuesday, May 19th, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. Commissioners Jim Barber, David Fox and Wayne Kohler were present. Chelsey Schmidt, County Clerk, and Bill Kassebaum, County Counselor, were present.
Flint Hills test world-class riders
UNBOUND Gravel included several race distances this year, including 25-, 50-, 100-, 200- and 350-mile events. Council Grove area residents may be especially interested in the UNBOUND Gravel 200, because that was the race that came through Council Grove on Saturday. Complete results for all race distances can be found at www.unboundgravel. com/results. Two world-class off-road cyclists with roots in traditional cycling disciplines claimed the top elite titles Saturday as UNBOUND Gravel sent riders through the Flint Hills and Council Grove.

Strikes deer in road
On May 10, Micah Cauthers, 19, Cottonwood Falls, was traveling north (location not reported) when he struck a deer in the roadway. There were no injuries. The driver of the 2014 Kia Soul was wearing his seatbelt.

CG’s dam road to fully close for up to 90 days
The dam road at Council Grove Lake will be barricaded and fully closed beginning the week of June 1 as repaving work mobilizes. Gary Kepley, Deputy OPM-Kansas Area, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Tulsa District, reported the closure information to the Council Grove Republican.

When Nick Kovacs arrived in Council Grove Tuesday night, he had not simply driven in for Unbound Gravel. He had ridden his bicycle from southwestern Wisconsin.

UNBOUND Gravel riders will travel through Council Grove on Saturday, May 30, with the first riders expected to arrive around 10 or 10:30 a.m., according to the Council Grove Police Department.
