LETTER TO EDITOR

A recent letter to the editor suggests that the goal of the constitutional amendment is to give Kansans a greater voice concerning who serves on the state’s highest court. If that is true, why is the proposed amendment on the primary ballot on August 4? Why not put the question to a vote at the general election in November when more Kansans turn out to vote? The answer to these questions is because the proposed constitutional amendment is intended to politicize the judiciary.

Men’s prayer breakfast will be 6:30 a.m., Tuesday at the senior center. Dearrell Tummons will be the speaker. All area men are welcome. - Correction: The special Council Grove City Council meeting had two executive sessions and not three as reported in Wednesday; s Republican. - The Morris County Transfer Station will be closed Friday and through the weekend. However, the north lot for limbs, brush and metal will be open. Office manager Elisha Bacon said the residents have been very mindful of the rules so the lot remains open. - Jan Koepke’s letter to the editor in the Wednesday July 1, edition should have read at the end of the first paragraph. “We could easily use the same system that 14 of the 26 states whose judges are elected by popular vote without an affiliated party designation.” Koepke regrets the typo.

Revolutionary-era ancestors remembered by area families

As the nation prepares to observe its 250th anniversary, the Council Grove Republican asked area residents to share the names of Revolutionary War-era ancestors preserved in their family histories. The responses reached from Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Virginia and North Carolina to families now connected to Council Grove, Cottonwood Falls, Alta Vista, Wilsey and other communities.

DECLARATION OF DEPENDANCE The United States Declaration of Independence was an act of the Second Continental Congress, adopted on July 4, 1776, which declared that the Thirteen Colonies were independent of the Nation of Great Britain. The document, formally entitled The Unanimous Declaration of the Thirteen United States of America, and written chiefly by Thomas Jefferson, explained the justifications for secession from the British crown, and was an expansion of Richard Henry Lee’s Reso-lution (passed by Congress on July 2), which first proclaimed independence.
